Dr. O’Driscoll’s Workshop on Web 2.0 and 3Di Technologies

September 20, 2008

On September 16, 2008, I had the great privilege of attending a workshop in Charlotte, NC. on Web 2.0 and 3Di Technologies delivered by Dr. Tony O’Driscoll, Professor of Practice of Business Administration at The Fuqua School of Business, Duke University.

It was a phenomenal presentation with an incredible amount of valuable information on Web 2.0 and 3Di.  It also highlighted how these technologies are working together to literally change the way we collaborate, learn, and innovate.

I was so glad I had my laptop to mindmap his presentation.  With mindmapping, I was able to take notes AND create URL links to the valuable resources he highlighted throughout the session.  I think when you click through this mindmap you’ll not only get a sense of the wonderful presentation he gave, but you’ll also come away with an appreciation of what computer based mindmapping can do.

No matter how good a note taker you are, paper and pencil can’t compete with computer-based mindmapping.  Not to mention that I can now reuse and rearrange this information anyway that I like. As more people learn about mindmapping I am convinced it will change the way we capture and manage information.

Below is the mindmap I created during the workshop. You can click on the mindmap to enlarge, but to get the full benefit of the mindmap, I suggest you download the Free MindManager Viewer and then download the mindmap from Biggerplate.com.  Then you’ll get the full functionality of the mindmap – all the layers of detail, notes and active URLs.

You can also go to Dr. O’Driscoll’s Blog and see the entire PowerPoint presentation.  Click Here

So, How Do You Define a Great Mindmap? Mindmappers Speak Out

September 16, 2008

Chuck Frey, author and creator of The Mind Mapping Software Blog recently posted this question on his blog, “What are the defining characteristics of an excellent software-produced mind map?”

Mindmappers from all over the world are responding to the question.  Take a look and see what they have to say (and if you are so inclined, add your own perspective to the dialogue).  Click Here.

NovaMind Launches New Mindmap Library: NovaMind Connect

September 14, 2008

Like Biggerplate.com and Mappio.com, Novamind has recently launched their own Mindmap Library called NovaMind Connect.

NovaMind Connect, in the words of NovaMind Founder Gideon King, “is a completely new and unique system for you to share your Mind Maps online.”

He goes on to say, “NovaMind Connect allows you to almost instantly take the Mind Map document that you have created in NovaMind and upload it directly from NovaMind to NovaMind Connect, where it is turned into a full HTML version of the document, where you can click on each Mind Map to view the detail of that Mind Map. From there you see all the branches of the Mind Map in expandable outline form, and you can navigate to each branch either by clicking it on the Mind Map, or in the outline.”

Additionally, NovaMind Connect has full international support built in, so you can upload your mindmaps  in any language.

I had an opportunity to take a look at the site and it is quite impressive.

NovaMind has created a 2-minute Introductory video on the new site.  Click Here.

McCain-Obama Mindmap: Helping You Decide Who to Vote For

September 1, 2008

The Presidential Election in November will be one of the most important in America’s history.  Barack Obama was nominated as the Democratic Presidential Nominee last week and John McCain will be nominated as the Republican Presidential Nominee this week.

With all the convention speeches, television ads, and political talk shows it’s easy to get caught up in the emotion of the campaigns.

But given what is at stake for our country, it is important that we not pull the lever in November based solely on emotion.  It is important that we understand “what they will do” if elected.  That we understand their plans for America.

I’ve created a mindmap to help you decide which candidate to vote for.  All of the content and graphics for the mindmap come directly from their respective websites.  I have not added or deleted anything with respect to their policy positions.  It is taken verbatim from their websites.

This is a historic election for the 300 million citizens of the United States of America.  Whoever wins this election will shape our country and the world.

Choose wisely.

To view the detailed policy positions for each candidate, click on the Notes icon next to each policy area.

You will need to download the free MindManager Viewer 7 to make the Notes icons active.

Jamie Nast Interview: Thoughts of a Mindmapping Thought Leader

August 27, 2008

In a previous post I wrote about a webcast featuring Jamie Nast, author and creator of the Idea Mapping Blog and Chuck Frey, author and creator of The Mind Mapping Software Blog.

Recently, Chuck Frey conducted an interview with Jamie Nast.

Jamie Nast is one of the most prolific trainers and speakers on the topic of visual mapping. In this interview, she candidly explains why it’s critical that executives learn to express their ideas visually, using hand-drawn idea maps and mind mapping software, and the risks of not doing so.

This is an interview you don’t want to miss!

The Blueprint to Success: Adam Sicinski Does it Again

August 24, 2008

In a previous post I wrote about the incredible mindmapping of Adam Sicinski.  Recently, he created a mindmap that is simply worth sharing with everyone you know.

It is one of those positive thinking “can do” mindmaps that you’ll want to refer to again and again.

He calls it “The Blueprint to Success”.  And one time through the mindmap, I think you’ll agree it is indeed a Blueprint to Success.

See for yourself:

You can download a full-size PDF version of the mindmap at his site.

And by all means tell other people about it.

PersonalBrain 4.5: Dynamic Mindmapping

August 20, 2008

TheBrain Technologies has created the most dynamic mindmapping software on the market: PersonalBrain 4.5.

With most mindmapping software the central main topic remains in place regardless of the software’s drill down capability.

But with PersonalBrain whatever topic (or what they call a “Thought”) you click “becomes” the central main topic.  And what’s even more remarkable is that the related topics associated with the “new” main topic are also displayed.

One challenge, of course, is describing this remarkable software with words.  So here is a visual to illustrate what I mean.  Below notice when “Markets” is clicked the other Thoughts associated with Markets are also dynamically displayed:

Shelley Hayduk, Vice President of Marketing and Sales for TheBrain Technologies, notes on the TheBrain Blog, that this approach to mindmapping has several major advantages:

  • Information can be dynamically loaded as it is needed, enabling infinite scalability so that vast amounts of information can be mapped.
  • There is always a context for the current item, so details such as contact information can always be synchronized with the display and usage of the system can be accurately measured and reported against.
  • Non-hierarchical relationships can be displayed. Because of the self-referencing nature of networked information, it is impossible to represent non-hierarchical information visually unless the display is rendered from the perspective of a selected item.

Another tremendous advantage of PersonalBrain is its ability to dynamically manage enormous amounts of information.

Shelley Hayduk, puts it this way, “With conventional mind mapping software, each map cannot practically be larger than a few hundred items. PersonalBrain is designed to allow tens of thousands of items and files to be integrated into a single workspace. The software offers a dynamic visual display that is infinitely scalable. In fact, this same interface is in use at the Department of Defense, Encyclopedia Britannica and large Fortune 500s to navigate and visualize hundreds of thousands of objects and databases. It would be impossible to scroll through such large data sets with standard mind maps.”

If you are interested in a robust, dynamic, information management solution, I highly recommend you download PersonalBrain 4.5 for 30 days and experience it for yourself.  Click here to download.

After you download the software, play the video below for Tips and Tricks on using PersonalBrain 4.5:

One Mindmapping Thought Leader Interviews Another

August 5, 2008

Chuck Frey, Mindmapping Thought Leader and creator of The Mind Mapping Software Blog recently interviewed Michael Tipper, Mindmapping Thought Leader and specialist in accelerated learning principles and techniques.

This is simply one of the best interviews on mindmapping you’ll ever read!  Michael Tipper REALLY understands the power of mindmapping.

He understands that it’s about the results mindmapping can produce (both educational and business) that should be the focus, rather than mindmapping as this creative diagram with words, images and colors.

He puts it this way in the interview: “Millions of drills are sold to people every year who do not want a drill.  What they want is the hole and of course the drill is the route to that. But ultimately it is the hole they are after.  In other words, they don’t care about the tool as much as the benefit that the tool provides. It’s the same with mind mapping.”

You’ll have to read the interview to get the rest of his point.  I strongly encourage you to do so.

Chuck Frey asks some great questions and Michael Tipper gives some great answers.  You’ll learn a lot about the power of mindmapping and how it can change your life.
